Rehabilitation for eating and drinking difficulties

Difficulty eating and drinking (dysphagia) can have a huge impact on peoples lives. We feel strongly that each person with dysphagia should have access to real therapy based on the best available evidence. It should be timely, effective and tailored to their unique set of circumstances.

A range of medical conditions can lead to swallowing problems (dysphagia) in adults including; stroke, treatment for mouth and throat cancer, head injury, Parkinsons' Disease.

The most effective therapy for your swallow problem must be based on a thorough understanding of your swallowing difficulty. Our comprehensive clinical swallowing assessment may include Fibreoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallow (FEES), videofluoroscopy (modified barium swallow examination) cranial nerve examination and muscle strength testing.

Our rehabilitation programme is tailored to you and is determined by our assessment findings and your unique set of circumstances. Types of swallow interventions may include:

  • targeted swallow function exercises

  • intensive therapy programme (McNeil Dysphagia Therapy Program)

  • electrical stimulation

  • Tongue strength training using the Iowa Oral Performance Indicator (IOPI) device

  • Expiratory/respiratory muscle strength training E/RMST

We will recommend the correct type, intensity and frequency of intervention based on the best current evidence. We work flexibly to fit in with your needs. We offer out-patient office or hospital-based settings or we can come to see you in your own place of residence if it is appropriate to do so. Skype or FaceTime sessions can be offered in some circumstances.

We have many years experience of working within the NHS, and continue to do so, and are very happy to liaise with your NHS specialists.
