Course Outline

Clinicians providing FEES and EEL examinations - and other technical instrumental assessments and interventions - are required to demonstrate expertise in 3 domains of competence – Knowledge, Technical, and Integrative.

Following on from theoretical and technical training, trainees must apply their learning into practice and continue to progress their competency development in these domains, under supervision, and to the standard required by their professional body.

However, clinicians are not always able to commit to regular supervision for a variety of reasons - lack of clarity about roles, time pressures and clinical conflicts, lack of a clear curriculum or competency framework for each domain, or for supervisors, maybe hesitation about being responsible to sign off the acquisition of competence across the 3 domains.

This session addresses these concerns, presenting the evidence-based education principles which optimise medical education and adult learning. Running from 09.15 - 15.30, it is presented with FEES and EEL in mind but the learning is transferrable to other areas of specialist clinical practice, such as Video-fluoroscopy Swallowing assessment and Surgical Voice Restoration. 

At SVS Training, our philosophy is that post-graduate competency development should be learner centred and learner driven, and be manageable and rewarding for both the trainee and their supervisors. We have designed this course for clinical supervisors who are enthusiastic about providing excellent supervision and trainee practitioners who wish to move into the driving seat of their own competency progression and prime their skills for future supervision responsibilities.

The SVS Education Framework and resources provide a roadmap to manage successful and efficient competency development. They align to, and complement, the RCSLT Competency Frameworks (FEES and EEL) with expanded and higher level competency descriptors across 3 domains, and reflect the principles of the AHP and broader NHS publications* which are driving Advancing Practice in our profession.

​This session is interactive and flexible and so the content can vary according to the experience of the delegates and the discussions on the day. However, by the end of the session you will have covered a range of topics and will -

• Have reflected on what good supervision looks and feels like

• Explore different models of delivering and receiving supervision

• Be able to design workplace-based training and supervision mapped to the specific training objectives across 3 competency domains

• Be able to provide appropriate feedback

• Be able to identify and support the trainee who is struggling

• Be confident to choose appropriate formative and summative assessment methods

• Be able to facilitate the trainee’s personal development planning

• Understand the expectations of workplace-based supervision for both the supervisor and the trainee

• Have a clear understanding of how to develop and optimise a sustainable FEES Training Pathway in your own work-place
